Signs you might need
ear wax removal

If you’ve been feeling something’s not quite right with your hearing, you may have a build-up of wax. Blocked ears are uncomfortable, and if you’ve been trying to fix that with cotton buds, they can actually make things worse. They tend to push wax deeper into the canal rather than remove it, which is often what causes the blockage in the first place.

Whilst ear wax is normal and usually clears on its own, sometimes it builds up and the symptoms can start to affect your day-to-day life. If you’re experiencing any of the following, it’s worth getting it checked. It’s a quick procedure and most people notice a difference straight away.

  • Muffled or reduced hearing
  • A sensation of fullness or pressure in the ear
  • Tinnitus (ringing or buzzing sounds)
  • Earache or mild discomfort
  • A persistent blocked feeling that won’t clear on its own
  • Dizziness or a feeling of being off balance

What is microsuction?

Using a small specialist suction device, I gently remove the wax directly from the ear canal without any water. That means no mess, no flushing, and a clear view throughout so I can see exactly what I’m doing.

I use a digital camera at every appointment so you can see exactly what’s there before treatment begins, and the difference once it’s done.

Microsuction vs ear irrigation

Ear irrigation uses a pressurised stream of water to flush wax from the ear canal. It can work well, but it isn’t suitable for everyone and carries a higher risk of discomfort, infection and trauma to the ear canal than microsuction.

Because microsuction uses no water, it’s a better option for people who:

  • Wear hearing aids
  • Are prone to ear infections
  • Have a perforated eardrum or have had previous ear surgery
  • Have found ear irrigation uncomfortable or ineffective in the past

  • What people say about Earresistible

I would highly recommend Alex. The service she provides is highly informative throughout with the benefit that she uses a camera to show you exactly what she will be removing, and then afterwards so you can see the difference. This is also the only local service I could find that will travel to you, so highly convenient.

Got a question about microsuction?

Here’s everything you need to know about microsuction before booking, and if your question isn’t here, please get in touch.

No. Most people find it straightforward and comfortable. You may hear a low suction sound during the procedure and occasionally feel mild pressure if the wax is particularly compacted, but it isn’t painful. I’ll check in with you throughout and we can stop at any point if you need a moment.

Your appointment will last around an hour in total. The procedure itself usually takes up to 30 minutes depending on how much wax is present and whether one or both ears need treating.

Yes, microsuction is particularly well suited to hearing aid wearers. Regular wax build-up is very common with hearing aids and microsuction removes it safely without water or irrigation.

In some cases, heavily impacted wax needs softening before it can be fully removed. If that happens I’ll let you know on the day, advise on next steps, and we can arrange a follow-up appointment. There are no surprises and no obligation.

Yes, it really helps to soften the wax beforehand. I’d recommend using a few drops of olive oil in the affected ear two or three times a day for three to five days before your appointment. Pharmacy ear drops work just as well.

Usually within a few days. I offer daytime, evening and weekend appointments across Nottingham, so get in touch and we’ll find a time that suits you.
