Signs you might need
ear wax removal

Ear wax build-up is one of the most common causes of hearing problems in adults, and the symptoms can creep up gradually. Blocked ears are uncomfortable, and if you’ve been trying to fix that with cotton buds, they can actually make things worse. They tend to push wax deeper into the canal rather than remove it, which is often what causes the blockage in the first place.

Whilst ear wax is normal and usually clears on its own, sometimes it builds up and the symptoms can start to affect your day-to-day life. If you’re experiencing any of the following, it’s worth getting it checked. It’s a quick procedure and most people notice a difference straight away.

  • Muffled or reduced hearing
  • A sensation of fullness or pressure in the ear
  • Tinnitus (ringing or buzzing sounds)
  • Earache or mild discomfort
  • A persistent blocked feeling that won’t clear on its own
  • Dizziness or a feeling of being off balance

What is ear irrigation?

Ear irrigation uses a gentle, controlled flow of warm water to flush ear wax from the canal. It’s a safe and well-established method that has been used for many years, and when carried out by a trained professional it’s comfortable and effective.

The procedure is performed with you seated, with your head tilted slightly to one side. Warm water is directed into the ear canal using a specialist irrigation device, loosening and flushing out the wax. Most people find it a relief rather than an uncomfortable experience.

I use a digital camera throughout every appointment so you can see exactly what’s there before treatment begins, and the difference once it’s done.

Ear irrigation vs microsuction

Both treatments effectively remove ear wax but they work differently and suit different patients. Microsuction uses no water and is generally considered the gold standard, particularly for sensitive ears. Ear irrigation uses a gentle flow of warm water and is well suited to patients with softer wax or those without contraindications to water in the ear canal.

Ear irrigation isn’t always the right option. It may not be suitable if you:

  • Have a perforated eardrum
  • Have had previous ear surgery
  • Have a history of ear infections
  • Have had complications with ear irrigation in the past

Got a question about ear irrigation?

Here’s everything you need to know about ear irrigation before booking, and if your question isn’t here, please get in touch.

No. Most people find it straightforward and comfortable. Warm water is gently directed into the ear canal using a specialist device, and the sensation is usually described as a mild pressure or warmth rather than anything uncomfortable. I’ll check in with you throughout and we can stop at any point if you need a moment.

Your appointment will last around an hour in total. The procedure itself usually takes up to 30 minutes depending on how much wax is present and whether one or both ears need treating.

Yes, it really helps to soften the wax beforehand. I’d recommend putting a few drops of olive oil into the affected ear two or three times a day for three to five days before your appointment. Pharmacy ear drops work just as well if you’d prefer those. If you’re not sure whether to use drops, just ask when you book and I’ll advise.

Not always. Ear irrigation isn’t recommended for people with a perforated eardrum, a history of ear infections, previous ear surgery, or those who have had complications with ear irrigation in the past. If you’re unsure whether it’s right for you, get in touch before booking and I’ll help you decide. Microsuction may be a better option in some cases.

Sometimes heavily impacted wax needs more softening before it can be fully removed. If that happens I’ll let you know on the day, advise on next steps and we can arrange a follow-up appointment if needed. There are no surprises and no obligation.

Usually within a few days. I offer daytime, evening and weekend appointments across Nottingham, so get in touch and we’ll find a time that suits you.
